HOME OF THE MUSCLE TRACTOR: we focus on tractors and farm equipment from 1960-1990!
The year 1960 marked a turning point in farm mechanization where horsepower was taking over. That is just what Heritage Iron is all about – unstoppable, brute power! We’re going to talk about tractors, equipment, manufacturers, and history from the greatest era in agriculture when tractors and equipment were controlled by the operator, not a computer. Whether your favorite brand is red, green, blue, or yellow, Heritage Iron covers them all with comprehensive articles and full-color photography.

White first introduced the Boss name to the industry in 1973. The White family included the Field Boss, Harvest Boss, Yard Boss, Plant Boss, etc. The Boss name was used for over a decade until there was a new “boss” in town. Move over, Boss, here comes the Hoss… Workhorse, that is.
Numerous cab manufacturers emerged across the US in the 1950s, each claiming their products were superior for farmers. Among them was Excel Industries, based in Hesston, KS. Competition in the cab market had intensified by 1967, with over 70 manufacturers producing similar products. Excel’s competitive edge lay in its innovative use of fans to pressurize cabs, preventing dust infiltration—a feature that was soon replicated by competitors. To stay ahead, Excel shifted its focus from aftermarket cabs to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) contracts.
Whether you are a red tractor fan or not, it’s hard to deny the impact on the sport of tractor pulling those Farmall tractors from Rock Island made. Introduced in 1971, the 66 series left a legacy by powering thousands of farms through the boom years of the 1970s and beyond. Their connection to tractor pulling is probably as much or more important to history as the acres of furrows these tractors have turned. From farm stock, straight out of the field, to the top tier of super stock tractor pulling, the 66 series left its mark on the sport.
Factory built 4WD tractors were available in 1967 but still somewhat out of reach for most farmers. They were typically priced much higher than even the largest 2WD tractors of the time. Many mechanically inclined farmers began building their own tractors. Potentate was powered by the same 238-hp 6-71 GM Detroit Diesel engine and 5-speed Eaton transmission used in a coal truck.
While he professes to favor Olivers, Kenny Garman tackles other brands. One such diversion was his creation of some Allis-Chalmers 440 models never made commercially: a high-clearance, wide-track Allis-Chalmers 440, a 440 multi-axle tractor, plus others.
